The Cardigans – Lovefool

Released in 1996, this is a song you can probably remember on the radio. It’s one of The Cardigans well known songs, and became their first hit after it was released!

The Cardigans come from Sweden and though their music is very smooth and classy, they were surprised to learn their American fans expected them to be glamorous. They were also surprised to learn people believed they were a satirical band. They were offended and said they took their music seriously, anyone saying or thinking it was a joke was being rude to them and their music.

Lovefool was a powerful driving force for the band. It’s biggest achievement was driving The Cardigans over the line to commercial success. The song pushed their 3rd album, First Band on the Moon, to the top of the charts making it hit platinum in 3 weeks! It’s been featured in films, including Romeo and Juliet, and Cruel Intentions, and it’s gotten the band interviews with prestigious talk shows like The Late Show with David Letterman.

They created the song with dark lyrics and an upbeat sound, one of many times they’ve shaken up their music style and experimented. It turned out pretty well in my opinion!

It is fun to see how everyone has their own views on what bands are supposed to be like. I will have to check out this band some time. Sometimes AL it takes is one song being a hit and then it becomes easier to promote the rest.

Great song. Kinda annoyed that they weren’t very sporting about the whole being mistaken for a satire band thing. I’d have expected them to be all good-natured about that, and just take it in stride and laugh it off.
